about
If you knew the annihilation of the human race was imminent, would you stick around to witness it? That’s the question at the centre of Mortal Coil.
Reading Nevil Schute's apocalyptic novel On The Beach got me thinking about the last moments of human existence. The lyrics explore different people’s coping mechanisms, while the lo-fi sound and background interference evoke destruction and chaos. We got the ominous effect by tuning the guitars down to drop-A and recording the drum mics through distortion pedals.
The track isn’t a single in the usual sense, with its two-act structure, bleak subject matter, and runtime of over five minutes. The main riff existed as a voice note on my phone phone for over a year, initially written off as being too heavy. But then a period of listening to Cleopatrick and Deftones provided the inspiration to take the idea forward.
It's the second release (after Luddite) featuring Guy Davis (Reuben, Freeze the Atlantic) on drums. This one gives him the opportunity to unleash the beast.
lyrics
Waking dreams of blinding night
Sudden sunrise and fall
Living's dark in dying light
With a conscience at war
Look heavenward open wide
Swallow what you're taking
Open arms to broken sky
As it's caving in
Stand tall
Embrace downfall
Once more
Impatience calls
Wait
Always one to bite your tongue
But I know what you're thinking
The clock is ticking
The tolling bells are yours
Hurling sticks and stones at broken homes
Won't rebuild your walls
Embrace downfall
Once more
Indifference calls
Stand tall
Embrace downfall
Once more
Impatience calls
Wait
Do you want it bad enough to wait
If you want it that bad
Wait
